
Acute Diarrhoea in adults: Initially, 2 tablets (4mg), followed by 1 tablet after each subsequent loose stool. Usual dosage ranges between 3 to 4 tablets a day. Maximum dose should not exceed 8 tablets (16mg) per day.
Chronic Diarrhoea in adults: Initially, between 2 to 4 tablets per day in divided doses depending on the severity of the disease.
Recommended maximum daily dosage for children:
3 mg for 2 - 5 years of age
4 mg for 6 – 8 years of age
6 mg for 8 – 12 years of age
‘ Should not be used in children below 2 years of age’, since Loperamide hasreported to cause paralytic ileus and death in children
(Note: Ileum: the distal portion of the small intestine, extending from the jejunum to the cecum. Ileus: intestinal obstruction. Paralytic Ileus: adynamic ileus i.e. ileus that has lost its normal or vital powers)
